8 years and $80,000: supporting Dumas Wesley Community Center

Southeast Toyota Finance, along with our parent company JM Family Enterprises, supports more than 40 local nonprofits across our different business locations – but the Dumas Wesley Community Center in Mobile, Alabama, is among our oldest partnerships.

Since 1906, the Dumas Wesley Community Center has been serving its neighbors. It currently offers more than a dozen different programs targeted toward homeless families, senior citizens, single parents, at-risk youth, and those in poverty. These services allow individuals and families to get back on their feet, both mentally and financially.

One example is the Child and Adult Care Food Program, which works with 58 family daycares to reimburse qualifying parents for snack and food costs. In 2020, the organization served nearly 178,000 meals to 375 children, offering more than $284,085 in reimbursements. Another is the Senior Activities for Independent Living (S.A.I.L.) program, which provides food and activities like games, health checks, and computer classes for the elderly. Even during COVID-19 when contact was scarce, they distributed more than 18,000 meals to low-income senior citizens.

Over the past eight years, JM Family has given more than $80,000 to support programs like these and to sponsor Dumas Wesley’s Sybil H. Smith Family Village, a transitional 24-month housing program for women and children in need.

This cause is also near and dear to our associates’ hearts, too. Southeast Toyota Finance associates in Mobile have made a yearly tradition of volunteering for the Dumas Wesley Toy Store as well as hosting an annual toy and essential needs drive to support families during the holiday season.

Every year, Dumas Wesley sets up a substantially reduced-price toy store for Sybil H. Smith Family Village residents. During the holidays, more than 50 women have the opportunity to buy affordable toys for their children with the help of JM Family associate “elves” who volunteer to run the store. Money raised goes toward Dumas Wesley’s neighborhood outreach program, which provides after-school achievement programs, youth sports, and more.

JM Family and Southeast Toyota Finance also have a history of participating in Dumas Wesley’s annual plane pull. This wacky event pins dozens of teams against each other to see who can pull a full-size plane weighing more than 130,000 pounds 12 feet forward the fastest. Each team must raise at least $1,000 to take part in the competition, and JM Family has raised $5,000 for the event since 2019!
