You’ve heard of the lucky three, a magical number destined to bring good fortune. But the success of the third generation Toyota Tundra, introduced for the 2022 model year, had nothing to do with luck. Instead, it had everything to do with specialized engineering and a determination to serve our drivers.
Completely redesigned from the ground up, the 2022 Tundra is a powerhouse of a truck, built for durability and tough jobs. With five different trims available, the Tundra offers a wide range of options. Its two powertrain choices and suite of safety features ensures a ride that is both strong and safe, while its all-new personalized multimedia system keeps drivers entertained and comfortable.
The 2022 Tundra has already arrived at a Toyota dealership near you. But before you go see it, here are some more details on what to expect.
You can now choose from two powertrains with the Tundra — the i-FORCE and the i-FORCE MAX. Both come with a twin-turbo V6 engine, but the standard i-FORCE runs on gasoline, while the i-FORCE MAX is a hybrid.

Powertrains with punch: The 2022 Tundra’s i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX
Most trucks on the market only come with one powertrain fueled by a gas engine, but the 2022 Tundra offers far more flexibility than that. You can now choose from two powertrains with the Tundra — the i-FORCE and the i-FORCE MAX. Both come with a twin-turbo V6 engine, but the standard i-FORCE runs on gasoline, while the i-FORCE MAX is a hybrid.
The 2022 Tundra overcomes the old myth that hybrids are inherently sluggish. While both powertrain options offer an impressive amount of power, the hybrid V6 offers even more than the standard V6, serving up 437 horsepower while non-hybrids are in the 300s. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid accomplishes this by taking advantage of its electric motor’s instant response time, powered by a 288V battery beneath the passenger seats.
Both the i-FORCE and the i-FORCE MAX have a 10-speed Electronically Controlled Transmission, which includes a sequential shift mode, uphill/downhill shift logic, and two tow/haul driving modes for lighter and heavier loads. The 2022 Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds, which is nearly 18% more than the previous generation.
With this great power also comes great fuel economy. All i-FORCE models get about 20 miles out of a gallon, whether they’re two or four-wheel drive. That number can even increase to 24 on the highway.
Toyota engineers didn’t just focus on the engine, though. Your driving experience is improved through every part of the redesign — including its host of safety and convenience systems.
One of the truck’s noteworthy features is the Adaptive Variable Suspension system, now available on the Tundra for the first time. This system can sense sudden changes in the road — like potholes, bumps, and rocks — and automatically adjust the Tundra’s suspension to avoid discomfort or damage.
Another system is the Multi-Terrain Monitor, available on select models. It allows drivers to check their surroundings by pressing a button to see cameras in the front, rear, and sides of the truck. Also available on select models is the Panoramic View Monitor, which displays a top-down view of the truck and its surroundings. Other camera views in this system are also trained on the truck bed, the sides of the trailer, and the hitch.

Superior systems: The 2022 Tundra’s advanced cameras and sensors
Nobody can look everywhere at once, which is why the 2022 Tundra is constantly aware of its surroundings, working to keep you safe at every turn. One of the truck’s noteworthy features is the Adaptive Variable Suspension system, now available on the Tundra for the first time. Drivers will be familiar with the Blind Spot Monitor, a camera that gives you a look at your car’s blind spots on the sides. But the 2022 Tundra also recognizes blind spots for your trailer when connected with Toyota’s integrated trailer brake controller.
Speaking of trailers, the 2022 Tundra can be equipped with Trailer Back Guidance, which helps you turn corners smoothly and accurately. This system also includes Straight Path Assist, which makes sure you back up in a straight line with your trailer.

Finally, every 2022 Tundra comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5™, a powerful system of monitors that helps you drive safely and conveniently. Its features can detect a vehicle or pedestrian in either daytime or low-light situations and provide audible and visual alerts, keep your car centered in its lane, read and display certain traffic signs on the Multi-Information Display, and more.
The driver and passengers can talk to the virtual Intelligent Assistant the way they would speak to a person, with wake-up phrases like “hey” and “OK Toyota.” These voice commands can be used to search for directions, adjust audio controls, and more. You can also set up a User Profile to document personalized vehicle settings, like preferred climate control or media options. These settings can then be transferred to other Toyotas upon login.
Years in the making: The 2022 Tundra’s all-new multimedia options
Imagine a car you can interact with the same way you may speak with Siri or Google Assistant. That’s what the Human Machine Interface system is — and the 2022 Tundra has the honor of being the first Toyota to offer it.The driver and passengers can talk to the virtual Intelligent Assistant the way they would speak to a person, with wake-up phrases like “hey” and “OK Toyota.” These voice commands can be used to search for directions, adjust audio controls, and more. Along with the Human Machine Interface system comes a new multimedia touchscreen in either 8 inches or an unprecedented 14 inches. It’s designed to be as responsive as a tablet or phone screen, with familiar functions like pinching to zoom in and out. You can use this screen to connect to Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.
The 2022 Tundra also has two new instrument panels — the available 12.3-inch thin film transistor panel, and a 4.1-inch multi-information screen. The larger screen features measurements like a tachometer, speedometer, and other gauges that the user can select to be displayed. Meanwhile, the smaller screen can show anything from audio selections to vehicle diagnostics.
