Toyota models named TOP SAFETY PICKs in 2024 IIHS awards
July 2024
5 min read

Since it started selling cars in the U.S. in 1957, “Toyota” has become nearly synonymous with “safety.” And nothing proves that better than the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) annual TOP SAFETY PICK awards.

As of June, Toyota has won eight TOP SAFETY PICK awards for the 2024 model year. Additionally, one model won a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, meeting the IIHS’s highest possible standards.

But what does it take to make the cut?

What are TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+?

Since 2006 and 2013 respectively, the IIHS has awarded the TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards. Each vehicle undergoes a series of controlled crash tests and is graded from “good” to “poor” on each trial.

The standards are always changing. In 2024, TOP SAFETY PICK vehicles must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front and updated side test. Vehicles must also earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.

Meanwhile, TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles must earn good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side test and no less than acceptable in the updated moderate overlap front test. Additionally, vehicles must earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.

Here are 2024’s TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ Toyota winners as of June 2024.

2024 Prius Prime

The 2024 Prius Prime comes in six colors — including Supersonic Red!
In 2023, the Prius and Prius Prime were redesigned from the inside out — and it paid off.

The new designs match a sporty, sleek exterior with a modern interior, plus a boosted hybrid powertrain. A panel of independent automotive journalists even named it the 2024 North American Car of the Year!

In the past 10 years, the Prius Prime has won two TOP SAFETY PICK and two TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.

2024 Camry

The 2024 Camry is built with Toyota’s light yet strong New Global Architecture platform.
Next on the list is the 2024 Camry, the country’s best-selling midsize sedan for 21 years in a row now. It earned several “good” scores and even a G+ on its easy-to-use child seat anchors.

With 12 different trim levels spanning across gas and hybrid powertrains, the 2024 Camry is known for its buffet of buyer choices. From popular exterior packages like the stylish Nightshade to the sporty, performance-focused TRD trim, there is a Camry for everyone.

Just as it’s familiar to drivers, the Camry is familiar to the IIHS, too. For the past 12 consecutive years, the organization has dubbed it a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicle.

2024 Crown

The 2024 Toyota Crown has two different powertrain options — the powerful Hybrid MAX system, or the fourth-generation Toyota Hybrid System.
After half a century, the reimagined Toyota Crown is back in the American market! It scored a “good” on all its crash tests and a G+ for its child seat latch.

The Crown, which hadn’t been sold in the U.S. since 1972, was released again in 2023 as an all-hybrid, midsize car. It comes standard with Toyota’s newest safety technology, Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0, and has available advanced features like Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Alert.

Since its return, the Toyota Crown has been praised by the IIHS. The 2023 Crown received a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award.

The 2024 Highlander is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+.
For more than 20 years, millions of people have trusted the Highlander to get their families from point A to point B safely. And the 2024 Highlander continues that tradition, scoring “good” multiple times across IIHS’ various tests.

The 2024 Highlander keeps its multiple trim options and reliability while also adding new features, such as a new stylish Nightshade version. Its hybrid models also have Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, an assortment of behind-the-scenes systems that help keep the vehicle stable and the steering precise.

The Highlander truly is an IIHS standout. It’s won a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ award every single year since 2008, when Toyota first entered the contest.

2024 Sienna

Due to its status as a hybrid, the 2024 Sienna is one of the most fuel-efficient minivans on the market.
Long called the “Swagger Wagon,” Toyota’s 2024 Sienna doesn’t just look cool. It’s also safe, as proved by its multiple “good” IIHS scores and G+ child seat latch.

Since 2021, the Sienna has foregone the gas engine for an all-hybrid lineup. It has 12 different trims — including the Woodland Edition, which is designed for camping trips with roof rails, extra power outlets and a tow hitch.

The Sienna is another IIHS favorite. Since 2010, the Sienna has won 10 TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards.

2024 Tacoma, crew cab

One of the 2024 Tacoma’s many advancements is its redesigned coil spring, multi-link rear suspension.
The Tacoma was completely redesigned for the 2024 model year, and its various improvements show in its aced safety tests.

The 2024 Tacoma was designed to set a new standard for trucks. It’s built on a new TNGA-F platform shared with the Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser, and has both hybrid and gas powertrain options, as well as a high-tech interior.

The key to the Tacoma’s return to the IIHS awards was an improved performance in one of its front crash tests. The Tacoma crew cab also won TOP SAFETY PICK awards in 2019, 2009 and 2008.

2024 Tundra, crew cab and extended cab

The 2024 Tundra has an available 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, the largest Toyota offers.
The 2024 Tundra is unique because it’s the only Toyota to win two IIHS awards at once: one for the crew cab and another for the extended cab.

Redesigned just two years ago, the Tundra features attractive add-ons for 2024, like a Nightshade option and TRD 3-inch suspension lift kit. You can also choose between the i-FORCE engine and i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine, which provides more torque than its gas counterpart.

Like many other Toyotas, the Tundra isn’t new to the IIHS awards. The crew cab and extended cab were dubbed TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles last year, and the extended cab previously won five TOP SAFETY PICK awards since 2008.

Redesigned in 2023, the Prius now boasts a slick, sporty exterior and a fifth-generation hybrid system. And of course, it’s equipped with Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0, the newest incarnation of the system.
