Since it started selling cars in the U.S. in 1957, “Toyota” has become nearly synonymous with “safety.” And nothing proves that better than the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) annual TOP SAFETY PICK awards.
As of June, Toyota has won eight TOP SAFETY PICK awards for the 2024 model year. Additionally, one model won a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, meeting the IIHS’s highest possible standards.
But what does it take to make the cut?
What are TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+?
Since 2006 and 2013 respectively, the IIHS has awarded the TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards. Each vehicle undergoes a series of controlled crash tests and is graded from “good” to “poor” on each trial.
The standards are always changing. In 2024, TOP SAFETY PICK vehicles must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front and updated side test. Vehicles must also earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.
Meanwhile, TOP SAFETY PICK+ vehicles must earn good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side test and no less than acceptable in the updated moderate overlap front test. Additionally, vehicles must earn an acceptable or good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention and come with standard acceptable- or good-rated headlights.
Here are 2024’s TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ Toyota winners as of June 2024.
