The Toyota Tacoma is so beloved that it even has its own fan-generated nickname: The Taco. And in 2024, Toyota’s engineers made sure the Taco has more than enough fillings in a brand-new redesign!
Designed in Michigan, Arizona, and California, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma was built for the American market. This ultimate “adventure machine” boasts a new frame, more engine options, Toyota’s most up-to-date safety suite, and more!
“Our engineers outdid themselves with this next-generation Tacoma,” Dave Christ, Toyota’s group vice president and general manager, said. “This truck offers customers more of everything, including technology, style and capability, all with an attractive starting [price].”
Let’s take a look at what you can expect.
Two engine options
The i-FORCE delivers up to 26 miles per gallon, 278 horsepower, and 317 lb.-ft of torque. And although it’s untraditional, the hybrid i-FORCE MAX is actually more powerful, producing 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft of torque. Toyota’s engineers have won awards for the engine’s unique design!
For traditional enthusiasts, a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT) with rev-matching and stall avoidance technology is also available. You can also get a clutch start cancel feature, which allows the truck to start while in gear to help with steep slopes or rough terrain.
A fresh frame
With the new engines comes a new frame, too — the TNGA-F global truck platform, previously featured on the Tundra, the Sequoia, and an upcoming Land Cruiser.
This frame is made of high-strength, precisely cut steel, with aluminum incorporated into the upper body to reduce weight. Its cross members have also been strengthened to last longer and carry gear like tents, kayaks, camp fridges and more. Attachment holes make roof rack rails easy to add!
The truck’s bed is also made with a new sheet-molded compound construction, making it light and strong. Its volume has increased by 7%, and it’s deeper so more gear can be stored under a closed cover. A bed view camera is also available, making it easy to tell if your cargo is strapped in and safe.
Gas grades have a 400-watt AC inverter outlet in the bed, while the hybrid models have a 2400W AC inverter. A 12-volt DC power plug is also an option for the bed and cabin. These can be used to run small fridges, generators, stovetops, and more!
Finally, the aluminum tailgate now has a quick release and close button. You can also close the tailgate hands-free with an auto-close function. All it takes is pushing up on the tailgate with your knee.
Easy towing
What is a truck if it can’t tow? Thankfully, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma has you covered. Its maximum towing capacity is 6,500 pounds!
The truck also has many available features catered toward safety and peace of mind while towing. Its Trailer Back Up Guidance and Straight Path Assist help the driver back up, and its Tow/Haul drive mode increases the throttle to lighten the load.
And if you want more eyes, the Panoramic View Monitor gives you a 360-degree, bird’s-eye view of what’s around your vehicle. The Blind Spot Monitor covers your truck but can also extend to certain trailers, and the wireless trailer camera lets you peek behind your tow load. Plus, the backup camera makes hooking trailers easier than ever!
A convenient cabin
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma isn’t just pretty on the outside. Its inside cabin is also packed with details meant to make your driving experience even easier.
An 8-inch or available 14-inch multimedia touch screen gives you Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, which is your portal to Toyota’s Connected Services and is compatible with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Similarly, the instrument panel can be 7 or 12.3 inches, depending on your preference.
Each 2024 Toyota Tacoma has a Smart Key System with a push-button start. With a Remote Connect subscription, you can start the car, open and close doors, and protect tailgate access from afar through your smartphone. A Smart Card key, which is the size of a credit card and easy to carry, is also available.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma’s gas models have three times as much storage space under the rear seats as previous generations—and, of course, the rear seats can still fold down. The instrument panel also has a shelf for storing a phone or other items, while the center consoles and door panels have MOLLE panels for hanging equipment.
And last but not least, the Tacoma now offers a premium 10-speaker JBL® audio upgrade. This includes a JBL® FLEX portable speaker, which acts as the center speaker while docked on the dashboard but can be detached and taken anywhere. It can even be submerged in up to 3 feet of water!
Safety first!
Everything in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is up to date — so why would its safety equipment be any different? Each Tacoma comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) 3.0, the newest iteration of the system.
TSS 3.0 “sees” your car’s surroundings through multiple sensors and cameras and helps you drive safely. Its new subsystem, Proactive Driving Assist, helps drivers brake and steer in potentially dangerous situations. Most of its other functions, such as the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, also received face-lifts.
The Tacoma also has safety features geared toward its function as a truck. The Multi-Terrain Monitor helps you control wheel spin on mud, dirt, and sand, and CRAWL Control lets you go on cruise control while off-roading. Meanwhile, Downhill Assist Control helps the truck navigate sharp descents without trouble.
